Welcome to Scotchbriar Nubians!
We are a small, select herd of ADGA registered Nubian Dairy goats, located in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains in Upstate New York. The herd foundation began in 1993 when 2 does were given to me. Immediately captivated by their beautiful ears, wonderful milk and engaging personalities, the small herd soon blossomed. Starting out first in 4H, we transitioned into a competitive show herd in the early 2000's. Our goal is that all animals in the herd be competitive both in the show ring and the milk pail. It is a source of pride to us that our does are home grown. While we may often bring in outside bucks for genetic diversity, all of our does can trace back to our original herd matriarchs. We are continually striving to breed for strong, healthy dairy goats that are elegant, structurally correct, with beautiful, strongly attached mammaries that "fill the bucket." Our does not only win in the show ring, they can produce. Temperament is also an important trait, no scream gene here! We have only American Nubians. While we do not hold anything against the purebred pedigrees, we personally have found better hardiness, production, and temperament in our Americans. We believe in judging a goat on its merits, not on whether it has another letter in front of its registration number. We are long time members of ADGA, American Nubian Breeders Association, NYSDGBA & CYDGS. Thank you for your interest in the herd, we hope that you find this site informative. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions. |
Herd health is very important to us. Our herd is CAE negative and CL free. We test annually for CAE prior to each kidding season. Periodic Johnes testing has been performed and has always been negative. We were fortunate that all of our foundation stock tested directly N/N for G6S mutation and we maintain that status by only using G6S N/N bucks. Good health starts with proper nutrition and all animals have free access to pasture all season long. Free choice 1st & 2nd cutting hay, free choice dairy goat minerals, baking soda and kelp are provided, we feed Poulin dairy goat grain, formulated for goats in the NorthEastern states. BoSe and CD&T injections are given twice annually, we also vaccinate against Rabies, copper boluses are given as needed. Goats are screened on a regular basis for signs of parasite load and deworming is provided as appropriate. All kids are maintained on a Coccidiosis prevention program.
We are always happy to talk goats! Please feel free to contact us and we will strive to answer any questions you may have. We look forward to working together with you to find the animal that will best suit the purposes of your herd, and to support you in the future with building your new herd or adding to what you may already have.
